Key down-ballot races in today's early voting states

  • Greater Alaska Area: In 2022, moderate Democrat Mary Peltola pulled off a historic upset by defeating former Governor Sarah Palin in the final round of ranked-choice voting in the state. This year, Republicans are hoping second-time candidate Nick Begich can return the state to Republican hands. Peltra has made fishing the focus of its campaign. Begich focuses on energy policy.   • 5th District of Connecticut: Rep. Jahana Hayes has represented the longtime Democratic-held district since 2019, which includes some of the state's reddest areas, including Wolcott, Thomaston and Watertown counties.   • Texas 28th District: Henry Cuellar, a longtime Democrat representing the 28th District, is seeking his 10th term this year. He won the final race at midterms by a 13-point margin. In the last presidential election, Biden won the region by seven points. The Justice Department indicted him in May on charges of money laundering, conspiracy and bribery. The embattled incumbent will face Republican former Navy commander Jay Furman. This race is Lean D.
  • Texas District 34: To Southeast Texas. There, incumbent Democrat Vicente Gonzalez is seeking a fifth term in Congress. He won the midterm exam by 8.5 points. He will face former Republican state Rep. Mayra Flores, who briefly represented the district in 2022. This Gulf Coast region is rated Lean D.
