Econ professor advances past Dem primary to face GOP opponent in MN 8th House district

Jen Schultz won the Minnesota 8th District Democratic Primary on Tuesday night, defeating Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate John Manter. She will advance to the general election to face off against Republican incumbent Rep. Pete Stauber.

The Cook Political Report ranks the 8th District as “solidly” Republican territory.

Munter of Worba was a native of Albion, New York, and graduated from Duluth East High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1972. According to Ballotpedia, before retiring, he earned a degree from the University of Dubuque Seminary in 1988 and worked as a writer and for Delta Airlines.

Jen Schultz, a Duluth resident for nearly 20 years, teaches economics at the University of Minnesota and served as a state representative for eight years, where she pushed for numerous bills focused on expanding affordable health care, raising wages for caregivers, investing in home and community-based services and “closing corporate tax loopholes,” according to her website.
