Eileen Gu receives support from US Winter Olympics athletes during China debate

Support for Eileen Gu Amid Criticism at Winter Olympics

As Eileen Gu, an American-born skier, faces scrutiny for representing China at the Winter Olympics, two fellow athletes have come to her defense.

Kelly Curtis, a seasoned member of Team USA competing in women’s skeleton, shares that she hasn’t given much thought to Gu’s choice. Instead, she emphasizes her admiration for Gu’s skills and achievements. “Honestly, I never really thought about it. She’s the most decorated freestyle skier and she’s on top right now. I have nothing but respect for her,” Curtis mentioned in a conversation.

On a similar note, AJ Edelman, who serves as the captain of the Israeli bobsled team, voiced support for Gu’s decision to compete for China. Edelman, who prides himself on his American roots, stated that he would ensure never to represent the U.S. against Israel. He questioned the criticism Gu has faced: “Each athlete is on a different athletic journey… It’s inappropriate to expect athletes to conform to others’ expectations.”

Edelman pointed out that all athletes have the freedom to choose their paths. Reflecting on his own choice to represent Israel, he explained, “I felt that the best way to impact that community is through representation.” He has faced significant financial hardship to compete, living below the poverty line to support his Olympic goals.

In contrast, Eileen Gu has seen considerable financial success while representing China, with lucrative sponsorships expected to yield millions in the coming years. Gu has expressed that her decision to represent China honors her mother’s heritage, stating, “I’m doing this for my mom, who was born in China.”

Amidst this, Gu has also faced tough questions regarding China’s human rights record. When asked about potential human rights violations against minorities in China, she stated, “I haven’t done any research… I don’t think it’s my job… It’s irresponsible to ask me to be a spokesperson for any topic.” She later described feeling like a “punching bag” due to the backlash against her choices.

Still, she noted that criticism may stem from a broader perception of China, stating, “…people have a problem with me doing that because they lump China together as this monolithic entity.” She seems to accept that public opinion may vary based on her performance, reflecting, “I think they probably wouldn’t care that much if I wasn’t doing well.”

Gu has reported severe harassment, including threats and attacks, due to her choice to represent China, stating she has “been physically assaulted,” with alarming incidents such as her dorm being robbed and police involvement. She remarked, “I went through some things that I truly believe no one should ever have to endure.”
