Eileen Higgins wins over Emilio González, becoming Miami's new Mayor

Miami’s New Mayor: Eileen Higgins Wins Election

Eileen Higgins, a Democrat and former Miami-Dade County commissioner, emerged victorious in the Miami mayoral runoff against Republican Emilio González, a former city manager. The election took place on Tuesday, with Higgins garnering 59% of the votes compared to González’s 41%.

Neither candidate reached the required 50% in the initial round of voting, which necessitated the runoff. With her win, Higgins becomes the first female mayor of Miami and the first Democrat to hold the position since 1997. González has a notable political background, having served as the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under President George W. Bush and was part of Donald Trump’s 2024 transition team.

Miami is known for its predominantly blue stance compared to other areas in Florida, influenced by its significant percentage of foreign-born residents—around 57%. This demographic aspect has historically positioned the city as a key hub for international migration.

Throughout her campaign, Higgins focused on the importance of protecting immigrant communities, often criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration policies. She promised to leverage resources to shield these communities from possible detention and deportation, which was a major concern for many residents.

Her victory has invigorated Florida Democrats as they approach a tightly contested midterm election. Meanwhile, Republicans are committed to maintaining their influence in Florida, particularly in Miami-Dade County, which has a Hispanic majority.

Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Ken Martin, commented on the election results, noting that Higgins’ win represented a significant shift in Miami’s political landscape, highlighting her focus on local issues such as affordable living and safe communities.

“Higgins is the first Democrat to win Miami’s mayoral seat in nearly three decades. Her campaign resonated with voters concerned about housing costs and community safety as she contrasted sharply with her opponent’s alignment to Trump,” Martin stated.

This election attracted attention from both ends of the political spectrum. Prominent Democrats like former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg endorsed Higgins, while Republicans, including President Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis, rallied behind González.

Democrats view Higgins’ win as a strategic counter to Republican momentum ahead of the 2024 elections, particularly as they aim to protect their majorities in Congress during the 2026 midterms. A pivotal point of her campaign was the framing of Republicans as adversaries to immigrant interests, a message that resonated strongly given Miami’s demographics.
