‘Elect Me. I’m in the 20th Century’

President Joe Biden, 81, claimed re-election Wednesday, insisting he is ready for four more years because “I’m in the 20th century.”

“Pick me. I’m in the 20th century,” Biden said while speaking to reporters next to Japan’s president at the White House, before correcting himself: “It’s the 21st century.”

Special Counsel Robert Hur described Biden as “an old man with a bad memory,” and this is not the first time Biden has made gaffes or inaccuracies. Many times, perhaps several times during each speech, Biden makes embarrassing gaffes.

He has:

  • He said his favorite memory of 2023 was the supposed improvement in the U.S. economy.
  • Despite photographic evidence, claims he never met Hunter Biden’s associates
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin says he cannot remain in power
  • Hunter Biden’s out-of-wedlock child ignored, claims he only has 6 grandchildren
  • He twice declared his son dead in Iraq.

To reduce mistakes, White House aides have given Mr. Biden notecards and suggested he follow a prewritten script, Reuters reported in January. His planned words are usually fully “crafted and vetted” by a number of advisors.

That strategy appeared to be laid out at Wednesday’s press conference. Asked about the war between Hamas and Israel, Biden appeared to read his answer from his notecard.

Biden’s public appearances will do little to allay concerns about his mental health. Polls are showing bad signs for the president.

  • Quinnipiac: Only about a quarter of voters say Biden is physically and mentally fit to serve a second term.
  • Fox News: 54% of Democratic primary voters want an alternative to Biden
  • FiveThirtyEight: Joe Biden is the least popular president in modern history
  • CNN: Majority says ‘no chance’ of voting for Biden in 2024

Despite the challenges, Biden insisted Americans can trust his word.

Biden: “No one doubts that I mean what I say.” Said September Donor. “The problem is that sometimes I say everything I want to say.”
