Electoral College voters officially confirm Donald Trump’s victory

President-elect Donald Trump officially won After the presidential electors have cast their votes, the Electoral College will vote on Tuesday.

Trump received 312 electoral votes, while Vice President Kamala Harris received just 226. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Trump also won the popular vote with 77.2 million votes to Harris' 75 million.

On Monday, a group of U.S. Senate Democrats proposed a bill to abolish the electoral college system, but given the party's lack of power and the high hurdles to amending the constitution, it's a long shot.

“In an election, whoever gets the most votes should be the winner. It's that simple,” said Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii. “No one should have their vote counted any less based on where they live. The Electoral College is outdated and undemocratic. It's time to end it.”

Amendments to the constitution require approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress or three-quarters of state legislatures.

Democrats have long criticized the electoral college system because it allowed Republicans to win the president despite losing the popular vote. Although this was not the case for Trump, he also won the popular vote with 77.2 million votes to Harris' 75 million.

Defenders of the electoral vote system argue that without it, candidates would ignore less popular states and campaign only in the largest states.

“The 11 blue states will decide the president,” he explained.LevinTV host Mark Levin In October. “The entire rest of the country, 39 other states, tens of millions of people, will literally have no say in the presidential election.”
