Elizabeth Smart’s father discusses the Guthrie family’s approach through a public appeal.

The family of Nancy Guthrie, who is the mother of Savannah Guthrie from Today, has launched a public petition after she went missing on Saturday. They are urging anyone involved to provide proof of her survival. Ed Smart, whose daughter Elizabeth was kidnapped back in 2002, suggested that releasing a video was probably a calculated move.

“It’s crucial that we address the kidnappers directly,” Smart mentioned during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” He added that the captors are likely eager to comply with any request to resolve this situation and bring Nancy home.

Elizabeth Smart was taken from her home in Salt Lake City when she was a teenager and was held for nine months before being found. Her father noted that families often make public appeals to apply pressure on those who have taken their loved ones, signaling that they are actively searching.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday night. Authorities have not identified any suspects or motives but have confirmed that a crime occurred.

A video shared by the Guthrie family on Wednesday night called for anyone with information about Nancy’s disappearance to step forward. They mentioned the existence of a ransom note and expressed readiness for communication.

“We need to know for sure that she’s still alive and that you have her,” Savannah Guthrie said, joined by her siblings.

Smart explained that when his daughter went missing, their family made public statements in order to keep her case in the public eye. He emphasized the impactful role of media and social platforms in such situations. Elizabeth’s kidnapper was eventually caught after she was featured on “America’s Most Wanted.”

“Her captors were aware of our search efforts,” Smart recounted.

Even if Nancy Guthrie isn’t able to hear the messages from her children directly, it’s still valuable for her to know that she is being sought.

“It’s hard to say if Nancy can hear this, but it’s worth making the attempt,” Smart said. “There’s nothing more essential than instilling hope in her during what has to be a very tough time, and reassuring her that there’s a chance she’ll reunite with her family.”
