Response to US-Israeli Attack on Iran
Following the US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, activity surged on the platform X, as confirmed by Elon Musk. This came to light on Sunday after Musk reacted to X’s product director, Nikita Bier, who stated that the day marked unprecedented usage for the platform.
“Usage of X is the highest it’s ever been,” Musk commented, further emphasizing the spike in engagement. This development coincided with the airstrikes that targeted various locations in Iran, leading to the deaths of key figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
Videos showcasing the strikes, alongside footage of Iran’s retaliatory actions, circulated widely across social media over the weekend. The aftermath of the attack ignited discussions on whether these military actions would enhance the standing of the United States and the president, creating an environment for debates on the decisions made without legislative consent.
Ben Rhodes, a senior official from the Obama administration involved in the 2015 nuclear deal discussions, faced backlash for criticizing President Trump’s actions regarding the attack. In a post, Rhodes remarked on the shouldering of humanitarian impacts, implying that both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were unconcerned about the consequences.
Some conservatives quickly rebuked Rhodes, attributing part of the blame to the Obama administration for not adequately addressing the Iranian threat, pointing out how the Obama-era deal arguably escalated tensions.
Many voices in the conservative sphere expressed that a Trump second term could even worsen the situation, while others insisted that the previous administration sparked the current crisis.
Mark Thiessen, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, argued that a president who had established and enforced boundaries might have led to a more favorable outcome. Meanwhile, Republican operative Alec Sears remarked on the irony of Rhodes speaking out, given those who viewed his prior actions as precipitating current conflicts.
