Elon Musk Declares He Will Reduce Spending on Political Campaigns

Elon Musk Reconsiders Political Spending

Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he’s scaling back his financial involvement in politics, stating that his company, Tesla, is still on a positive trajectory despite recent challenges to former President Donald Trump’s support.

“From a political spending perspective, I plan to do much less in the future,” Musk mentioned during Bloomberg’s Qatar Economic Forum in Doha. Over the last election cycle, Musk invested hundreds of millions to aid Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, though there’s uncertainty around how his contributions will continue in Washington.

“If I think there’s a reason to spend politically in the future, I’ll do that. I’m not looking at a reason at the moment,” he said, appearing a bit tense during the interview.

These remarks have led to speculation that the close ties between Musk and Trump could be shifting as Musk steps away from his informal role as the administration’s “cost-cutting chief.”

Reflecting on his past political actions, Musk shared, “I did what I had to do.” He has since confirmed a reduced role, now dedicating just a day or two each week to the government efficiency initiative.

Tesla, a significant source of Musk’s wealth, has endured notable brand challenges, particularly tied to Trump’s presidency. His support for the far-right AFD party in Germany has also drawn attention.

In the U.S. and beyond, Tesla dealerships have faced protests and vandalism, an issue Musk condemned. “It’s certainly okay to oppose political things,” he noted, “but it’s not okay to resort to violence and make threats.”

When questioned about potential impacts of his political stance on Tesla’s electric vehicle sales, Musk maintained a resilient outlook. “Aside from declining sales in Europe, we are strong everywhere else,” he asserted.

Musk pointed to Tesla’s stock performance as a sign of recovery, stating, “We’re back to more than $1 trillion in market capitalization right now.” Clearly, he feels the market recognizes Tesla’s positive turnaround.

Legal Challenges Ahead

In various discussions, Musk expressed that he isn’t rushing to reveal developments from his space venture, SpaceX. He acknowledged the complexities surrounding public companies and the increasing number of lawsuits he faces, including one related to a rejected $55.8 billion compensation package.

“The compensation should match what was done incredibly,” Musk remarked regarding the court’s decision, adding, “But I am confident that whatever activists posing as judges in Delaware do not affect his future salary.”

Musk also mentioned his desire to pursue legal action against OpenAI, the company he co-founded but left in 2015. He voiced discontent with its shift towards profit, stating, “I funded OpenAI for about $50 million, which was intended to become a non-profit, open-source company.” He compared it to a non-profit initially aimed at protecting the Amazon rainforest that turned into a timber company.
