Emma Thompson Voices Frustration Over AI
During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, actress Emma Thompson expressed her “deep frustration” regarding artificial intelligence, stating, “Fuck me,” in a moment of exasperation.
When asked about the impact of the “coming AI revolution,” Thompson said, “It’s very frustrating.” She elaborated that she prefers writing by hand on a pad—something she sees as quite traditional. “I believe there’s a connection between the brain and the hand,” she added, which really highlights her process.
Thompson noted that while she usually types out her work in a Word document, she’s been increasingly annoyed by prompts asking her to “rewrite that.” “You don’t have to rewrite what you just wrote. Can you stop? Just stop!” she exclaimed, showcasing her frustration.
Colbert responded with a light-hearted remark, asking if she had ever considered showing Oscar’s script to a computer. Thompson laughed, commenting, “I don’t think you’ll mind.”
Thompson isn’t alone in her concerns. Many celebrities are voicing their worries about AI’s growing role in various fields. Recently, actors like Emily Blunt and Whoopi Goldberg joined the criticism against AI-generated “actresses,” particularly highlighting Tilly Norwood, with Blunt describing it as “really scary” and cautioning Hollywood agencies against this trend.
As reported, Hollywood faces a kind of “don’t ask, don’t tell” situation regarding AI in creative work, with mixed feelings about its implications. Some industry insiders suggest that while AI can save time, it could also jeopardize careers. For example, one documentary producer mentioned using AI to create a detailed synopsis, which he felt improved his final product. Yet, he was concerned about what would happen if his partners discovered AI’s involvement.
