The Empire State Building in New York has sparkled gold and white tower lights for four-hour windows on Monday night, until Tuesday morning in commemoration of Pope Francis after his death.
According to the Empire State Building website, the building has been shining from 10pm on Monday night and is lit up until 2am on Tuesday.
“Since 1976, Empire State Building Light, a critical feature of the New York City skyline, has captured the world’s imagination for decades,” the building’s website reads. “We maintain a tradition of changing the colour of light to recognize important opportunities, holidays and organizations throughout the year.”

“Since 2012, the building has used state-of-the-art LED lighting systems and can display over 16 million colors,” the website adds.
Francis passed away on Monday morning at the age of 88, finishing the 12-year Pope as the 266th Pope and spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome of Francis returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church,” Vatican Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Ferrell announced Monday morning.

“He taught me to live the values of the gospel with faithfulness, courage and universal love, especially in support of the poorest and marginalized people,” continued Ferrell. “With enormous gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we praise Pope Francis’ soul for the infinite and merciful love of one and the Trinity God.”
Political and religious leaders around the world mourned after learning of Francis’ death.
“Pope Francis rests in peace! May God bless him and all who loved him!” US President Donald Trump wrote about the true society.
