Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Seeks Statue for Charlie Kirk

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, has reached out to House Speaker Mike Johnson, advocating for a statue to honor conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was tragically killed on Wednesday during a speaking event.

In her letter to Speaker Johnson, she emphasized the importance of the statue as a lasting tribute to Kirk’s dedication, courage, and sacrifice. “I owe my entire political career to Charlie Kirk,” she mentioned, adding that she might not have been in office without his support, especially during challenging times when her own party wasn’t fully behind her.

Luna’s appeal has garnered support from several Congressional members, including Rep. Andy Ogles, Rep. Lauren Boebert, and Rep. Andy Biggs, among others.

She described Kirk’s death as “a wound to our nation,” pointing out how it reflects the rising political violence fueled by divisive rhetoric. “His death has left a family forever altered,” Luna noted, highlighting the grief that his wife, Erika, and their children will now face because of this tragedy.

In the letter, she acknowledged Kirk’s commitment to encouraging young people to engage in civic duties. As the founder of Turning Point USA, he created a significant grassroots movement, enabling students to express their views civilly on college campuses and defend the Constitution unapologetically. She mentioned that his efforts inspired many to pursue truth and public service with conviction.

Luna also paid tribute to Kirk’s strong Christian faith, which she said influenced everything he stood for. “He reminded this nation that our values—faith, family, and freedom—are not negotiable,” she expressed, implying that his devotion gave him the strength to face adversity.

Moreover, she pointed out that while the responsibility for violence lies with the perpetrator, it’s crucial to address the broader cultural intolerance that allowed such an act to occur. She criticized some of the left’s rhetoric as contributing to a toxic atmosphere that normalizes fear and violence against differing opinions, concluding that the hate they claim to oppose feeds into such tragedies.

In her closing remarks, Luna urged Speaker Johnson to initiate plans for placing Kirk’s statue in the Capitol, emphasizing that this gesture should serve as a reminder against resolving political disagreements with violence and reinforcing the need for a continued fight for truth.

On the day of the incident, Kirk was shot in the neck while engaging with college students at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was quickly taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The FBI continues to search for the suspect, who remains unidentified, despite the recovery of the weapon used in the shooting.
