'Equality Law' Used to Prevent Middle Class White Men from Government Internship

A government spending watchdog has revealed that its future taxpayer-funded internships will now be exclusive to black individuals, women, or those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This has led to accusations of discrimination, particularly aimed at middle-class white men.

According to a provision in the Equality Act 2010, companies and public entities can utilize “positive action” to help address the disadvantages faced by specific ethnic or sexual groups in employment. However, this initiative is facing criticism for allegedly being discriminatory towards British men.

As reported by a certain outlet, paid summer internships at the National Audit Office (NAO), a government-funded body, will only be offered to individuals identified as black, female, or economically disadvantaged to foster “diverse talent.”

This means that a position valued at £25,089 for six weeks will effectively be unreachable for an upper-class white male, regardless of qualifications.

Besides the financial compensation, internships are often praised for their value in networking and learning from seasoned professionals. But, for some, this could mean their route to career progression is essentially blocked.

A representative from the NAO stated, “Our longstanding Diversity Internship Scheme offers crucial work experience in the audit sector.” They emphasized that this initiative aims to open up opportunities for those who are typically underrepresented, especially individuals from less affluent backgrounds.

Nigel Farage, from the Reform Britain party, has prioritized diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies while opposing what he terms “positive discrimination.” This discourse has intensified following the recent case of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old who tragically died in police custody amid claims from a Sikh man that he had been racially abusive.

Farage has argued that perceptions surrounding the DEI agenda are skewing public understanding, leading to a “two-tier” justice system that appears biased against white people in the UK.

Concerning the NAO’s decision to limit internships, Zia Yusuf, the Reform UK shadow home secretary, labeled it as “blatant discrimination,” insisting that hiring should be based purely on “merit.”

He stated, “This ideology, dressed up as diversity and inclusion, is fundamentally anti-white and anti-merit.”

Suella Braverman, a former Home Secretary and current Shadow Minister for Education and Equalities with Reform UK, added that the Equality Act has allowed for “anti-white racism and anti-male sexism” to flourish and pledged that a Reform UK government would dismantle such divisive laws to uphold a meritocratic ethos in workplaces.

“Our aim is to ensure that no individual faces discrimination based on personal traits, whether they are pregnant women, disabled individuals, white men, or ethnic minorities,” Braverman remarked.
