Mayor Eric Adams suddenly released bail on Wednesday in a high-profile forum alongside a leading Democratic challenger. His lawyer said he advised him not to join.
The incumbent was pulled out hours before the 6pm event hosted by DC 37, the largest municipality in New York City.
“Mayor Adams informed us that with the advice of his legal counsel he would no longer be able to attend to tonight's forum,” Union spokesman Shea Setterbo said in a statement.
“We look forward to it as other candidates have insisted on members about why they would make the best choice for the mayor of New York.”
The crowded field of Democratic candidates challenging him in the June primary allows them to make their claims to members of the strong union during the event.
DC 37 was one of the key unions that backed Adams during the 2021 race, but insiders say the labor group has been distanced from the mayor for the past few months, leaving Glove with influential support.
The forum would have been first attended by Hezoner in the 2025 mayoral campaign season.
Cancellation was first reported Politics.
Sources close to Adams confirmed that his lawyers told him the forum was not a good idea as his historic federal criminal case against him continues to drag on.
He confirmed his participation in last week's event, but was convinced that the case would be dismissed after he pushed so publicly to cast President Trump's Justice Department's charges of bribery and corruption.
But Manhattan Federal Court Judge Dale Ho said he wanted to hear first from a third-party legal expert before making a decision, but it's not expected until at least mid-March.
Adams is unlikely to take part in a similar forum while the case is over his head, sources said.

The DC 37 event will feature hundreds of union members hearing from state Sens. Jessica Caramos and Zellner Miley, city director Bloodlander, state legislative member Zoran Mamdani, former assembly member Michael Blake and former City Compolor Scott Stringer.
Adams insiders also said the mayor doesn't think the event is worth it without Top Challenger (former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is expected to officially announce his bid in the coming days).
