Union Leaders Arrested During ICE Protests in Los Angeles
In a recent conversation with Glen Beck from Blaze Media, attorney Bill Essay recounted the events surrounding the arrest of union leaders during ICE protests that escalated into riots in Los Angeles on Friday. Supporters of SEIU leader David Huerta claim that federal law enforcement targeted him intentionally. They also mentioned that Huerta sustained injuries during these events.
Essay asserted that, regardless of Huerta’s identity, he wasn’t going anywhere, as he would be in court the following Monday. He shared insights regarding the case that seemed to contradict the accusations against law enforcement.
“I’ve been following SEIU for a while now,” he told Beck. “While they may not be the brains behind this, they definitely have a role to play.” He then explained the situation regarding Huerta, being careful not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
According to Essay, Huerta physically obstructed agents attempting to carry out a search warrant. “He stood in front of the driveway, preventing agents from entering,” he said, which led to conflicts between Huerta and the agents involved. “Honestly, I don’t think anyone there knew who he was,” he added.
While the agents were executing the search warrant on a business, Huerta reportedly obstructed their movement, even placing a van to impede their access. “He simply wouldn’t budge,” remarked Essay.
He further clarified, “To be straightforward, my agent didn’t know who Huerta was at the moment. It wasn’t until hours later that we learned he was a politician when calls started coming in, urging us to release him.” Despite this, Essay remained firm: “I stated, ‘I don’t care who he is. He’s not going anywhere. He’ll be in court on Monday.’”
The SEIU has since voiced their support for Huerta, stating he was merely documenting the actions of federal agents. “We stand by Huerta’s role as a community observer, highlighting his longstanding commitment to advocating for migrant workers and justice,” they said. The union is firmly against ICE’s actions, arguing they disrupt communities and harm working individuals.
Huerta has been charged with felony conspiracy to obstruct an officer and was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
