Ethereum Price Risk: Departure of Whales Might Push ETH Under $4K

Whale Activity and Market Trends

In recent weeks, a significant Ethereum whale has shifted strategy, selling off a considerable portion of their holdings. Overall, the market sentiment remains quite weak, raising concerns about whether cryptocurrencies might dip toward critical support levels around $4,000.

According to data from crypto analyst Ali Martinez, over the last two weeks, large investors have offloaded more than 430,000 ETH. This is a massive amount, roughly valued at about $1.8 billion.

Interestingly, just a few weeks prior, these same whales had accumulated a similar amount of ETH, coinciding with a price drop from over $4,800 to below $4,100. Shortly afterward, Ethereum spiked to nearly $4,950 but has now entered a phase of selling pressure.

On a brighter note, some established investors, particularly those known as Bitcoin OGs in the crypto world, seem pleased with the current situation. They have engaged in trading BTC for ETH, with a notable transaction of around $109 million completed earlier today. Altogether, these whales have poured approximately $3.4 billion into ETH while offloading substantial amounts of BTC.

Market Implications

A sale of this magnitude by a whale can create two main effects. First, it increases immediate selling pressure on the asset. Second, smaller investors might react by following suit, potentially causing a cascade effect that further impacts Ethereum’s price.

As noted earlier, Ethereum was hovering around $4,250 earlier today but has since managed to recover some losses. Yet, there remains the possibility of a deeper correction, possibly pushing prices down to $4,000, a level not seen since early August.

Martinez has indicated that this $4,000 mark is pivotal in ETH’s current market structure. Losing this support could potentially result in further declines, dragging prices down toward $3,800.
