Ethics Committee Requires AOC To Cover Almost $3,000 For Met Gala Incident

Ocasio-Cortez Ordered to Repay Met Gala Gifts

A recent report from the House Ethics Committee indicates that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez must reimburse nearly $2,983.28 for gifts received during her attendance at the 2021 Met Gala.

The committee’s investigation concluded that while Ocasio-Cortez was not intentionally underpaid, she is still responsible for covering the fair market value of the items associated with her Met Gala outfit, including taxes on the gown and the cost of meals for her partner.

The gown was assessed at approximately $18,837.30, although the representative had originally paid $300 to rent it for the red carpet event. The report stated, “Ocasio-Cortez’s attempt to apply retail rental costs to handmade couture gowns was unrealistic.”

The committee determined the fair market price for renting gowns to be around $2,976.29, which means Ocasio-Cortez will need to cover the difference owed to the luxury brand that provided the gown.

Additionally, the report noted that she should also reimburse a $250 charge for her partner’s meal at the Gala, as complimentary meals were only provided for married couples or those who were attending with a spouse.

Another point raised by the committee was Ocasio-Cortez’s delay in making payments for various services. An email from her hairstylist’s agency indicated issues with timely payment, suggesting potential complaints about overdue payments.

While Ocasio-Cortez received her services, she claimed she didn’t fully understand how the payment structures worked after the event, leaving her uncertain about whether she needed to cover costs individually.

Her attorney stated that she was prepared to pay for certain items and services that were not initially clear to her and that her team had conducted due diligence in handling the payments.

The committee acknowledged that despite Ocasio-Cortez’s efforts, she did not fully adhere to gift regulations surrounding the free entry to the 2021 Gala, nor did she pay the complete fair market value for some items worn during the occasion.

In response, Mike Casca, Ocasio-Cortez’s Chief of Staff, expressed gratitude to the committee for their thoroughness and compliance efforts, stating that she accepts the decision and will fulfill the outstanding amount appropriately.

The committee also emphasized there was no evidence suggesting that Ocasio-Cortez intentionally set low payments for the goods or services provided in connection with the Met Gala. Many discussions about payments were managed through her campaign staff, as lawmakers often rely on legal advice regarding payment amounts.
