Leaders of the 27 European Union countries agreed to a $54 billion aid package on Thursday, despite repeated pushback from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has vowed to block the package since December.

European Council President Charles Michel announced the agreement on X from Brussels.

“We have a deal,” Michel said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He said the agreement “ensures solid, long-term and predictable funding for Ukraine” and demonstrated that “the EU has leadership and responsibility in supporting Ukraine.” We know what’s at stake. ”

The deal came as a surprise after Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had repeatedly opposed the aid package and threatened similar measures in recent days.

“The atmosphere this morning was not good. No one expected this,” the diplomat said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the move was a very important decision.

“The continuation of EU financial support for Ukraine will strengthen long-term economic and financial stability. This is as important as military support and sanctions pressure on Russia,” President Zelensky wrote in X on Thursday. Ta.

Additionally, several fellow leaders reportedly accused Mr. Orbán of blackmail and political maneuvering before the meeting began.

The aid package will be used to boost Ukraine’s economy and provide cash for hospitals, schools and civil servant wages and pensions.
