Rubio Critiques European Officials Over U.S. Military Actions

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Wednesday, called out European officials for criticizing the U.S.’s self-defense measures while simultaneously relying on American military assistance.

During the Trump administration, at least 19 vessels linked to narcoterrorism have been destroyed. The aim, as stated, is to “defend the homeland and eliminate cartel terrorists who threaten our nation.”

Rubio remarked, “I don’t believe the European Union can dictate how the United States should ensure its national security.”

President Donald Trump previously indicated that each drug ship taken out by U.S. military aircraft could potentially save thousands of American lives. This came after Army Secretary Pete Hegseth reported that the United States had sunk additional boats in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of six individuals suspected of being involved in narco-terrorism. This spurred a wave of complaints from foreign officials.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault, speaking at the G7 summit, expressed concern over U.S. military operations in the Caribbean, labeling them as violations of international law, especially given France’s interests in the region, where many of its citizens reside.

In response to inquiries about U.S. military actions, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reiterated that the EU adheres to international law, which permits the use of force only under specific circumstances like self-defense or through UN Security Council resolutions.

Rubio criticized what he viewed as disingenuous reactions from European leaders, suggesting they need to reconsider their stance. He stated, “It’s interesting that these nations are keen to send us nuclear-capable weapons for their security, but when the U.S. places aircraft carriers in our hemisphere, it’s regarded as an issue.”

Rubio concluded by underscoring the ongoing threat from narco-terrorist organizations and emphasized that the U.S. will continue to take necessary steps to ensure national safety. “If something like this occurs, it could end tomorrow—if those involved would just refrain from sending drug ships,” he noted.
