According to a trade group representing car dealers, the IRS created an amendment after some car owners were unable to request an EV tax credit this spring.
As NPR Previously reportedfound that some electric car shoppers across the country could not get the EV tax credits expected this spring.
And it seemed there was no way for the dealer to delay supervision, as the report had to be entered within three days of sale.
But now, the National Automobile Dealer Association (NADA) says there's a solution. in I'll warn the membersthe group says the IRS is allowing dealers to report sales that they are “qualified for a clean vehicle credit transaction that occurred in 2024.” Basically, the 3-day requirement is exempt.
The option to report sales retroactively was opened for testing as of Tuesday, March 25th and will be officially rolled out today, the group said. “It's unclear how long the feature will be open, but according to the IRS, dealers can start using the portal now,” Nada informed the dealer.
An IRS spokesman would not comment on the records, but did not object to information from the NADA Breaking News.
In a message to members, NADA (which did not provide additional comments to NPR and did not comment on NPR's original story) indicates that in addition to consumers, some car dealers were also affected by the issue. Some dealers were offering tax credits to shoppers in 2024, a new option, but did not report sales to the IRS in a timely manner. In those cases it was a dealer rather than a shopper, and missed out on the thousands of dollars they expected to receive.
Nada said the IRS “actively advocated” to introduce relief measures, indicating that members of Congress are aware of the issue thanks to the messages they received from their constituents.
To benefit from the reopened portal, taxpayers must work with the car dealership that originally sold the cars. Only dealers who can sign up for a system called the Eco Portal and submit sales to the IRS can sign up for the system.
