Former Teacher Charged with Sexual Misconduct

A 25-year-old former first-grade teacher from Washington state has admitted to committing first-degree sexual misconduct with a teenager. Mackenzie Noto entered her guilty plea on Friday.

Currently, Noto is being detained in the Whitman County Jail without bail. Reports indicate that she could face a sentence ranging from six months to a year in prison, based on the state’s sentencing guidelines. In addition, she will have to register as a sex offender for a decade.

The case gained attention when a teenage boy reported that Noto acted in a “frivolous” manner. The prosecuting attorney’s office has stated that her guilty plea may alleviate the need for the boy to testify in court.

Washington state classifies first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor as a Class C felony, which could result in a five-year prison term, a $10,000 fine, or both. A protection order has also been issued for the victim.

Authorities have scheduled Noto’s sentencing for August 28. In May, it was revealed that she had been teaching at St. John Elementary School since September, with the 16-year-old victim being a senior at St. John Endicott High School.

Following her arrest on May 10, the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office announced that they had received reports of an inappropriate relationship between Noto and the student. An investigation led to charges against her.

Documentary evidence surfaced when Noto’s husband reported her confession to having sex with the teenager. He provided screenshots as proof and indicated that he was acquainted with the boy and his family.

Initially, Noto denied any wrongdoing when questioned by authorities. However, during interactions, the minor noted that Noto had been flirtatious, which led to a meeting that ultimately resulted in sexual contact in a vehicle.

Reportedly, Noto was aware of the boy’s age but dismissed it, claiming he was “like one of her friends.” Following the incident, she reportedly expressed remorse and acknowledged that the relationship was inappropriate.

After the scandal, Noto’s husband filed for divorce in June. The school district has pledged full cooperation with investigations and is conducting its own review of the situation.
