New York Gubernatorial Debate Highlights
During a debate on Tuesday night, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman exchanged sharp accusations and nuanced statements. The debate, hosted by Spectrum News NY1, covered a range of issues including immigration, crime, taxes, sexual assault laws, energy, and the business climate in New York.
Here’s a look at some of the key claims made by each candidate and what’s been determined about their accuracy.
The claim: ICE agreements allow “rogue agents” to roam freely — Hochul
This remark was part of Hochul’s critique of Blakeman regarding Nassau County’s 287(g) agreement with federal immigration authorities, associated with the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.
Our verdict: Mostly false. The agreement enables local law enforcement to act as federal agents in enforcing immigration laws before Hochul enacted new sanctuary policies. While other areas in New York engage with ICE, their practices are limited primarily to detainee identification.
The claim: 2,000 corrections officers were fired for illegal striking — Hochul
Addressing a question about a staffing crisis in the prison system, Hochul stated that the removal of those officers was due to their unlawful job walkout. She emphasized her commitment to dismiss them if they repeated this behavior.
Our verdict: Partially true. The Taylor Law prohibits public sector strikes in New York while contracts are active, but many of those officers reinstated later were not legally supposed to be dismissed, with a significant number returning to their positions.
The claim: Fracking will halve utility costs — Blakeman
Blakeman proposed extracting natural gas from New York’s Marcellus Shale to combat rising energy prices.
Our verdict: Highly unlikely. Fracking was banned statewide by executive order in 2014, a ban later codified into law. Even if Blakeman were to win, reversing this policy would face significant obstacles given the Democratic majority.
The claim: Hochul was once NRA endorsed and opposed driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants — Blakeman
In response to Hochul’s attack regarding past property tax votes, Blakeman accused her of shifting her opinions during her previous congressional term.
Our verdict: True. Hochul did receive an “A” rating from the NRA and expressed her opposition to granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants during her campaign for Congress.
The claim: Hochul blames Trump for obstructing energy projects — Hochul
Hochul indicated that President Trump’s interference was responsible for hindering energy initiatives, particularly in addressing high energy costs for New Yorkers.
Our verdict: Partially true. While Trump has indeed resisted renewable energy developments, some of Hochul’s clean energy regulations have also contributed to rising costs.
The claim: Blakeman wants widespread data centers in upstate New York — Hochul
Hochul accused Blakeman of wanting to saturate upstate New York with polluting industries, including data centers.
Our verdict: Partially true. While Blakeman has shown support for data centers, he insists that local communities should determine their placement, and has highlighted their potential economic benefits.
The claim: Hochul cut middle-class tax rates to historical lows — Hochul
In a discussion about tax rates, Hochul asserted she had reduced them significantly during her tenure.
Our verdict: Partially true. Although she did lower rates for middle-income earners, these reductions were accompanied by increases for wealthy individuals, effectively changing the overall tax landscape.
The claim: New York has the fastest growing economy in the country — Hochul
Hochul countered Blakeman’s arguments regarding poor economic forecasts for New York, claiming the state’s economy is thriving.
Our verdict: Technically true, but misleading. While New York experienced a significant GDP growth recently, it grapples with long-term economic challenges, including a stagnant population and a high tax burden.
