Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) challenges Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to approve the Laken Riley Act and other bills to secure the border and protect law enforcement. Breitbart News exclusively revealed the pressure to pass the bill.
When the House overwhelmingly passed the Laken-Reilly Act, Brown wrote to Schumer in a letter obtained by Breitbart News that the law “would require President Biden’s administration to implement the law.” It was introduced as an “unfortunate necessity to enforce the law”.
The murder of Laken Riley, 22, at the hands of an illegal alien has become a focal point of the unfolding immigration crisis under President Joe Biden.
The suspect, Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, is accused of killing and kidnapping Riley as she jogged near the University of Georgia campus in Athens.

Ybarra reportedly crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in September 2022 and was released into the interior of the United States. He was arrested on shoplifting charges in October 2023, but was not turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
After he failed to appear in court, authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. Before traveling to the Peach State, Ybarra was protected by New York State’s sanctuary state policy.
The White House has so far declined to support the Laken-Reilly Act, saying it should be “on board” with the Senate border bill, but the bill may not be enough to curb the border crisis Breitbart News reported on.
Brown writes:
The tragedy inflicted on Laken Riley and other Americans is of particular concern as violent illegal immigrants are allowed to roam freely with impunity even after they are caught committing crimes in the United States. This is an avoidable outcome of President Biden’s open border anarchy. Article 1, Section 3 states that the president “shall take care that the laws are faithfully executed.” President Biden and his administration have failed to enforce federal immigration laws, and the House of Representatives has charged Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas with a deliberate and systematic refusal to comply with the law and a betrayal of the public’s trust. Passed a resolution to impeach. It is clear that Congress is under pressure to enact stronger legislation to compel the administration to act.
Therefore, Brown urged Schumer to pass the Laken-Riley Act, the House-passed Secure Borders Act, and the Thin Blue Line Act.
“These bills introduce needed reforms to our immigration and justice systems by rejecting the administration’s chaotic catch-and-release regime and holding accountable federal employees who have waived their oath to uphold the law. ,” the Hoosier senator explained.

The Laken-Riley Act requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to send detainees to detain undocumented immigrants who commit theft-related crimes. Thirty-seven House Democrats helped pass the bill.
According to a press release from Brown’s office, Brown’s Thin Blue Line Act would:
- When juries in federal cases consider whether to impose the death penalty, they must consider certain “aggravating” factors.
- Current law provides that if the murder victim is a federal law enforcement officer or federal prosecutor, this fact will be considered as an aggravating factor in favor of the maximum sentence.
- The Thin Blue Line Act provides the same level of justice for local law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and first responders.
- It would also increase penalties for defendants who target law enforcement officers, prosecutors, or first responders simply because they choose to protect and serve them.
The Border Security Act stipulates the following:
- Urge the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to resume border wall construction
- Tighten asylum standards
- DHS has narrow authority to grant parole to illegal aliens
“The American people are frustrated by Washington’s dysfunction and failure to protect its people from harm. It is a failure of one of the most fundamental purposes of government,” Brown concluded in his letter to Schumer. Ta. “I ask you to prioritize emergency measures that require immediate action from the Senate on behalf of the American people.”
