Iran Threatens Cyberattacks Amid Rising Tensions

As tensions between Iran and the United States escalate, experts warn of potential “high impact” cyberattacks. Esmail Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized in a recent interview with Al Jazeera that US involvement—particularly in tandem with Israel—could lead to “all-out war.”

Baghaei stated, “American intervention will be a recipe for all-out war in the region.” In this context, Theresa Payton, a former White House Chief Information Officer and current CEO of Fortalice Solutions, expressed her concerns regarding the precarious situation, suggesting that Iran may resort to cyberattacks as desperation mounts.

“I think it’s all on the table when it comes to Iran,” Payton mentioned, highlighting the distinct possibility of targeting crucial infrastructure. She pointed out that energy, utilities, and water supply systems could become prime targets, aimed at creating visible disruptions that impact everyday citizens.

Historically, Iran has engaged in cyber activities aimed at the US. Back in 2016, the Department of Justice charged seven individuals associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard for their roles in denial-of-service attacks against major financial institutions like Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase.

These coordinated cyberattacks affected online banking access for a significant number of customers, leading to substantial financial losses for these banks. In a separate incident in 2022, three Iranian individuals faced indictment for their attempt to launch a cyberattack on Boston Children’s Hospital. Christopher Wray, the FBI director at the time, affirmed the seriousness of these threats during a university-hosted meeting.

“Reports came in about a potential attack on Boston Children’s, showing the urgency of the matter. The proactive steps taken by the Boston Field Office’s cyber team played a critical role in safeguarding both the hospital’s network and the vulnerable children depending on it,” Wray explained.

With a notable track record of cyberattacks, Payton stresses that the threat from Iran shouldn’t be taken lightly. “They’ve engaged in various operations, from phishing political campaigns to launching denial-of-service attacks against financial services and critical infrastructure not only in the US but globally.” As the situation develops, it seems likely that cyber incidents are very much on Iran’s strategic table.
