While many on the left and their allies in the media have blamed former President Donald Trump for another assassination attempt, at least one counterterrorism expert argues that anti-Trump sentiment among Democrats and the media may have motivated the shooter and incited future attacks.
Former FBI counterterrorism agent Tim Clemente spoke shortly after the shooting Sunday near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. CNNWe spoke to Erin Burnett of about the incident.
“This man [Routh] He is highly politically motivated and has likely been provoked by much of the recent political bashing.”
After Barnett said two assassination attempts on Trump within weeks were unprecedented, Clemente called out lies and distortions about Trump, such as:Bloody Tragedy“It is likely that the out-of-context 'equating' him with Hitler incited the suspect's anger.”
“Unfortunately, the accusations against Trump, you know, have led to bloodbath language, saying the auto industry is being used as if they're going to stage a bloody coup if Trump loses,” Clemente said. “Those are the kinds of phrases you use in third world countries to talk about dictators, and unfortunately, I think that's led to attempts on Trump's life.”
Clemente also speculated about the suspect, later identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58. Barnett noted that unlike the original suspected assassin, Thomas Crookes, Routh fled the scene and was captured alive, details that Clemente explained made it likely that Routh was “highly politically motivated.”
“Apparently he's not suicidal,” Clemente told Burnett. “And [that] “It seems to me that he probably has more of a political motive. I don't want to say the name of the last shooter in Pennsylvania because I don't want to give him any publicity, but he was clearly a guy who was trying to get some fame out of that shooting.”
“This man [Routh] He is highly politically motivated and has likely been provoked by many of the recent political attacks.”
Barnett added that many Americans have likely become “immune” or “numb” to these attempts to assassinate President Trump. Clemente believes new attempts to assassinate President Trump are imminent in this growing anti-Trump political climate.
“I don't think this is ever going to end,” he said.
“I don't think this will be the last time some crazy people try to do something like this.”
