In a recent conversation, Attia highlighted several strategies that could contribute to not just a longer life, but also a more fulfilling and independent one as we age.

Understanding “Healthspan”

Attia discussed the concept of “healthspan,” a term that refers to the duration of life spent free from age-related diseases. Douglas E. Vaughan, a doctor at Northwestern University, notes that making certain lifestyle changes can help extend this period. Cutting out smoking, moderating alcohol intake, keeping a healthy weight, exercising regularly, avoiding processed foods, and ensuring good sleep are all crucial steps.

1. Treat Life Like a Sport

Attia suggests that aging individuals should view their lives similarly to how athletes approach their sports. As we grow older, maintaining fitness, strength, and mobility becomes critical. He personally dedicates about ten hours a week to a mix of cardiovascular exercises and strength training, focusing on different intensity levels to optimize results.

2. Track Meaningful Metrics

Instead of relying solely on standard blood tests, Attia advocates for monitoring fitness metrics like VO₂ max, which gauges how efficiently the body uses oxygen during intense activity. He believes it provides a clearer picture of longevity than traditional health measures.

3. Increase Protein Intake

Research indicates that higher protein consumption can enhance muscle mass and immune function and reduce disease risk. Attia recommends consuming protein at levels significantly above the standard guidelines.

4. Focus on Mental and Emotional Health

Emotional and mental wellbeing is just as crucial as physical health, according to Attia. Being intentional and proactive about mental health can lead to improvements in overall wellbeing. He credits his long-term marriage as a key factor in his life satisfaction.

5. Make the “Decade of Limits” Enjoyable

Even though decline as we age is inevitable, Attia encourages people to make the last phase of life as rewarding as possible. He points out that if no efforts are made, cognitive and physical abilities might drop significantly, leading to a less enjoyable experience in later years.
