Experts raise concerns about the popular TikTok trend of using magnesium lotion for improved sleep

Magnesium and Sleep: What You Should Know

Magnesium is a critical mineral that plays a role in various bodily functions. It’s essential for maintaining a healthy heart, supporting nerve function, aiding muscle and bone health, and helping to regulate calcium and blood sugar levels. Interestingly, some social media trends are suggesting that magnesium may enhance sleep quality, though experts caution that the scientific backing for these claims is limited.

Recent posts on platforms like TikTok highlight the purported benefits of magnesium lotions, oils, and sprays—particularly when applied to the soles of the feet. One user shared how, after incorporating magnesium lotion into their nightly routine, they noticed improved quality of sleep and a reduction in restless leg symptoms.

Dr. Brendan Camp, a dermatologist based in New York, expressed skepticism regarding these claims during an interview. He mentioned that more research is required to establish if topical magnesium actually increases the body’s magnesium levels to aid sleep. He also pointed out that the skin on the feet is quite thick, which may hinder the absorption of such products.

Dr. Wendy Troxel, a sleep psychologist at Rand Corporation in Utah, remarked that while magnesium lotions may appear appealing, current scientific evidence does not support their effectiveness in promoting better sleep. “It’s tempting to chase after quick solutions, especially with trending products touted as natural remedies,” she said. However, the evidence surrounding the sleep-related benefits of magnesium is still unclear.

Experts propose that the calming effects often attributed to magnesium lotions might actually stem from the act of foot massages themselves, rather than the lotion. Massaging the feet could elicit a relaxation response, which might lead to better sleep.

Sleep Health Basics

Troxel emphasized the importance of focusing on well-established methods to promote healthy sleep rather than succumbing to fleeting trends. Creating a conducive sleep environment—cool, dark, and quiet—is fundamental. Consistency in sleep and wake times is also crucial. She noted that pre-bed activities, particularly those involving screens, can be detrimental to sleep quality. The content on such platforms can be stimulating and distracting, impacting one’s ability to unwind.

According to experts, adhering to tried-and-true sleep health strategies tends to be more effective than relying on the latest product fad. Establishing predictability in bedtime routines signals to the body that it’s time to sleep.

Troxel also suggested incorporating other relaxation techniques, like setting aside scheduled worry time for jotting down thoughts or concerns, which might help mitigate racing thoughts before sleep.

For individuals using magnesium products to alleviate leg cramps or unusual sensations, Troxel cautioned that such symptoms may indicate restless leg syndrome, a clinical sleep disorder linked with iron deficiency. She advised consulting a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment instead of experimenting with unverified magnesium solutions.
