Eyes on Trump’s 2024 veepstakes; Senate border bill fails again

This Sunday’s news programs will likely focus on who former President Trump’s running mate will be.

The race for President Trump’s vice presidency has appeared to heat up recently, with several candidates stopping by the former president’s hush money trial in New York, including Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.), who is scheduled to appear on “Fox News Sunday” this week and was at a Trump rally in the Bronx this week, according to the Associated Press.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, another potential running mate for President Trump, appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” this week to criticize new television and radio ads the Biden campaign ran this week, criticizing claims about Trump’s record with black Americans and calling the current president’s record on race “terrible, vile and un-American.”

The bipartisan border bill, which failed in the Senate for the second time this year on a 43-50 vote on Thursday, will likely be a focus of this Sunday’s programming. One of the bill’s negotiators, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), is scheduled to appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this week.

On Thursday post Speaking on social media platform X ahead of the vote, Murphy said Republicans would “probably” kill the bipartisan border security bill because “Trump has told us to keep the border messy because it will give us an advantage in the elections this fall.”

President Biden blamed Republicans for blocking a border security bill that was again rejected by the Senate.

“Republicans in Congress don’t care about securing our border or fixing America’s broken immigration system. If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border security in history. Instead, today they’re putting partisan politics above our national security,” Biden said in a statement.

Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), appearing on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” this week, harshly criticized the bipartisan border bill in an opinion piece in The Hill on Wednesday. In the piece, the two right-wing firebrands said the bill was “rushed” and “crafted behind closed doors without the input of most Republicans.”

“The bill would also codify Biden’s catch-and-release policy, effectively requiring illegal immigrants to be released while their cases are processed,” the senators wrote in an opinion piece. “Americans would simply accept that, with the express approval of the federal government, millions of poorly vetted illegal immigrants will continue to flow into their communities, taking jobs, overcrowding schools, and inflating rents.”

“The bill also spends $20 billion we don’t have, further mortgaging our children’s futures,” the article continues. “The bill primarily uses the money not for border security, but to more efficiently process and disperse illegal immigrants throughout America, the vast majority of whom do not have valid asylum claims.”
