F1 legend raises doubts about Lewis Hamilton’s future with Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s Difficult Weekend at Hungarian Grand Prix

After a tough qualifying round at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton described himself as “useless,” suggesting that Ferrari might need to consider bringing in a different driver. This candid admission stirred discussions within the Formula 1 community.

The heavy critique of his performance didn’t stop there; it continued into Sunday as Hamilton finished 12th in the race. When asked about his performance and future, he gave an unclear response that left many puzzled.

“When you have feelings, you have a sense. There’s a lot going on in the background, but that’s not great,” Hamilton stated.

Hamilton’s struggles at the Hungarian track, where he has previously delivered outstanding performances, raised eyebrows. After qualifying in pole position numerous times, his finish this weekend was disappointing. He indicated that he may return after the summer break, but uncertainty looms about his ongoing place with Ferrari.

This has led to some notable figures in the sport speculating about his future. Bernie Ecclestone, who used to lead Formula 1 for four decades, weighed in. He commented that while Hamilton is incredibly talented, many athletes face a decline once they reach the top. “It’s just down,” he noted. Ecclestone believes Hamilton is wearied by the sport and suggested he might need a complete reset.

Hamilton, who joined Ferrari with high expectations ahead of the 2025 season, is yet to find consistent success, aside from his win in a sprint race in China. Since then, podium finishes have eluded him, with only a third place at the Miami GP to show for his efforts.

Ecclestone advised that if he were managing Hamilton, he would discuss a possible exit from Ferrari, claiming, “If I was looking after him, I would immediately negotiate with Ferrari… we need to consider if someone else might be a better fit.”

Contrasting this perspective, Toto Wolff, who has a long history with Hamilton at Mercedes, expressed a different view during the Hungarian GP. He believes Hamilton still has “unfinished business” in Formula 1 and remarked that the challenges with the current car are affecting his performances.

“Lewis hasn’t been satisfied with the current car since the 2022 regulations came through,” Wolff pointed out, emphasizing that there is hope for Hamilton with a new car design expected next year. He hopes the champion will revitalize his performance soon.

Wolff also indicated that if Hamilton had a car capable of delivering what he needs, there’s potential for another title. However, the feedback from his current vehicle has often not aligned with his expectations.

Other prominent figures in racing, like Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, have expressed confidence in Hamilton as well. Domenicali believes that although Hamilton is going through a rough patch, he has the talent and drive to come back strong.

“Lewis is a gem and an incredible athlete,” he stated, reinforcing his faith in Hamilton’s ability to bounce back as he strives for that elusive eighth title.

While Hamilton’s future remains a topic of debate, the upcoming season holds potential avenues for him. After all, even the most iconic figures in the sport face challenges, raising questions about the paths they choose moving forward.
