FAA Investigates Airlines Over Flight Reductions During Shutdown

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced plans to investigate airlines to determine if they adhered to orders from the Trump administration aimed at reducing flights during the extensive government shutdown.

This directive was issued in November after a month of closures, leading to a shortage of air traffic control personnel at airports.

The emergency order impacted 40 major U.S. airports, mandating flight reductions between 3% and 6% for each airline until the shutdown ended on November 12.

Concerns Over Delays

In a letter to U.S. airlines on Monday, the FAA warned that failing to comply could result in fines of $75,000 for each flight that exceeded the limits set during the grounding period.

Airlines have 30 days to demonstrate that they followed the required reductions.

During the 43-day shutdown, air traffic controllers and many other government employees went unpaid, which raised safety alarms. Many employees were absent, and it’s unclear what the full implications meant for flight safety.

Restrictions were lifted by the FAA on November 16, just a few days after the shutdown concluded.

According to Cirium, an airline flight analysis firm, the suspension of flights continued as of November 14, and while calls were made for a 6% reduction in flights, only about 2% were actually cut.

Financial Impact

The disruptions had substantial effects on airline finances; for instance, Delta Air Lines noted a loss of $200 million from November 7, when the order was enforceable, up until November 16.

Moreover, more than 10,000 flights were canceled across the U.S. within just nine days. It seems the chaos of the shutdown truly left its mark on the travel industry, leading to a complicated recovery period ahead.
