Faith leaders express support for Israel in Iran operation

Despite attempts to sway evangelical Christian backing away from Israel, prominent leaders in the community assert that their support for the Jewish state has remained strong since the onset of the U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran.

As a ceasefire took effect on Wednesday, Dr. Mike Evans, who founded the Friends of Zion Heritage Center in Jerusalem and is a key evangelical supporter of President Trump, shared his thoughts on the ongoing conflict. He had traveled to Israel on February 26, right before tensions escalated prior to military action.

During his trip, Evans visited the site of an enemy missile impact, interacted with injured civilians and Holocaust survivors, and donated $50,000 to affected families. “I went there because, well, I sensed a war was imminent. I’ve been to 41 wars. When there’s suffering, I intentionally head there to lend a hand,” he remarked.

On March 1, a missile from Iran hit Beit Shemesh, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals. Evans reached the scene shortly after first responders did. He later visited Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where he met Pnina Cohen, who lost both her husband and mother-in-law due to injuries from the strike.

Evans has dedicated much of his life to combating anti-Semitism and aiding Jewish communities. He pointed out that the ongoing U.S.-Israel partnership is unprecedented. “It’s astonishing, really. Who would have thought we’d see such collaboration against extremist ideologies?” he said, deeming the campaign “historic.”

He emphasized that the evangelical support for Israel stems from deep-rooted faith. “The Bible is essentially a Jewish text, and evangelicals believe in a Jewish Jesus,” he added. This connection leads many to view Israel as a Biblical nation, believing firmly that God honors His promises.

Despite a historical bond, Evans acknowledged a shifting landscape among younger evangelicals, estimating that about 22-23% have started to align less with traditional pro-Israel support due to influences from colleges and social media. “We’re making an effort to reach these individuals. I’m optimistic about it,” he said.

American pastor John Hagee, the figurehead of Christians for Israel, expressed continued support for Trump’s call to confront Iran’s aggressive tendencies. “We back his push for Congress to fund these initiatives. It’s essential for our government to reflect the morals of the American populace,” he noted.

Highlighting that Israel remains the sole democracy in the Middle East, Franklin Graham, who heads Samaritan’s Purse, emphasized the urgent need for prayers for peace in Jerusalem. He stated that the regime in Iran poses a distinct threat, emphasizing Trump’s unwavering stance in defending Israel.

Overall, while the evangelical Christian community appears deeply committed to supporting Israel, the changing perspectives within it highlight an evolving narrative that reflects broader societal influences.
