Family of Teen Indian Sexual Attacker Criticizes American Victim for 'Overreacting'

The family of an Indian teenager involved in the molestation of an American tourist at a metro station in New Delhi claims the victim is “overreacting.” They argue that the boy was merely “getting carried away” when he encountered the woman.

The American woman, visiting India for a friend’s wedding, characterized the incident as an “unfortunate and ugly” experience that overshadowed “eight fun and memorable days in India.”

Gaurav Sabnis, a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology, shared the woman’s story on social media. She reached out to him, recalling his warnings from her time as a student about attracting unwanted attention in India due to her appearance.

“I advised her to be cautious of sexual harassment, especially in Delhi. Here, you’re just a blonde. Over there, you become a target,” Sabnis reflected on their conversation.

Upon her arrival in New Delhi, the woman noted that strangers quickly approached her, asking for pictures. Remembering Sabnis’ advice, she declined many requests but consented to take a few with women and children.

“But then a teenage boy at the metro station completely ruined the scene,” she explained. “He was with his mother and sister, and I thought, perhaps it would be okay.”

“He put his arm around me, which felt odd, but I brushed it off. Then, he suddenly grabbed my chest and slapped my butt, laughing as if it were a joke,” she recounted.

In her anger, she pushed the boy, accidentally causing him to fall. His mother accused the woman of overreacting, suggesting that the boy simply hadn’t encountered a blonde woman up close before.

The incident has left the woman feeling apprehensive about returning to India, or anywhere in South Asia for that matter.

“Indian women have such a hard life. Is this what they deal with daily?” she remarked.

The story gained traction online, with many social media users supporting the woman while criticizing the teenager and his overly protective mother.

One commentator shared their daughter’s frustrations: “Every time she traveled to India, she was confused. Why do people stare at her breasts without making eye contact? Why do they ask for selfies as if she’s an object? Why do so many feel entitled to touch her?”

Another observer noted, “It’s unfortunate that some women enable their sons’ behavior. It’s a cycle. Mothers with sons treated like ‘Raja Beta’ often find themselves perpetuating such behavior instead of addressing it.”

What exactly is “Raja Beta Syndrome”? It’s a condition where mothers pamper their sons, essentially treating them like princes—Raja Beta translates to “Son of the King” in Hindi.

This nurturing approach can lead to young men with poor impulse control who may see women merely as subservient. There have even been court cases where this syndrome was referenced in the context of men accused of sexual violence. In one recent instance, a court eased a sentence for a woman who helped her son evade justice for a severe crime.
