Fani Willis may have to testify before Georgia Senate for alleged misconduct in Trump case

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis may continue to be asked to answer to allegations of misconduct in the Georgia lawsuit against President-elect Donald Trump.

Willis was disqualified last week from a lawsuit accusing Trump of trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The court decided to remove Willis from the case, citing “alleged misconduct” due to his relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

“We believe the verdict is wrong and we intend to appeal.”

Wade, who was hired by Willis, stepped off the case after the affair was exposed.

The appellate court decided, “After careful consideration of the results of the trial court's order, we conclude that it erred in not disbarring Attorney Willis and his office.”

Mr. Willis intends to appeal the court's decision.

In August, a Republican-led Georgia Senate committee subpoenaed Willis to testify as part of an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

But Willis' lawyer, former Georgia Gov. Roy Burns (D), argued that the Senate committee did not have the authority to compel her testimony. He also argued that the subpoena was too broad and unrelated to legislative necessity.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shukla Ingram ruled Monday that the state Senate can subpoena Willis. In addition, Mr. Willis was instructed that if he wished to file a response to the subpoena, he must wait until January 13th to do so.

Mr Burns said: Associated Press“We believe this judgment is wrong and we intend to appeal.”

Georgia's current term is scheduled to end on Jan. 13, effectively ending the Senate committee currently investigating Willis. However, Sen. Greg Dolezal (R) said he would introduce legislation to reinstate the committee in the 2025 session.

“See you again, Madam DA,” Ms. Dolezal wrote. post With X.

Georgia Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones (Republican) said“The Senate will not back down in the fight for accountability for taxpayer dollars.”

“The Senate will continue to fight for transparency and accountability,” Jones continued. “Senator Willis' refusal to appear before the committee is unacceptable, and addressing these issues to demand accountability will be a priority for the Senate.”

State Sen. Bill Cowsert (R) said, “Our hearings revealed gross prosecutorial misconduct that requires legislative relief.'' I look forward to completing this investigation and passing legislation that restores trust in the criminal justice system. ”

Ashley Merchant, the defense attorney who filed the initial motion to dismiss Willis on behalf of Trump co-defendant Mike Roman, said Willis will be investigated by the Justice Department for his actions. I expected it to be highly possible.

“I would be shocked if she wasn't investigated by the new Justice Department,” Merchant told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
