Tyrese Gibson has revealed shocking details from his childhood, admitting that his mother used him as a pawn to provide for the family.

The actor grew up in a single-parent household in Los Angeles, where he had one brother and two sisters.

“Mom told us [the] “The Social Security building and the theater,” the “Transformers” star revealed, “are just government cheese.”
“You can’t arrest me because my mother’s gone,” Gibson told the camera. His mother, Patricia Murray Gibson, died in 2022 after being hospitalized with COVID-19 and pneumonia.
“My mother said, ‘This is what we’re going to do,'” Gibson said of the plan she devised. “‘We have to go to this courthouse, and if you do this, we’ll get $760 a month, and your mom can use this, and you know, I’m here, we’re in this slum, I’m working, I’m trying to keep up,'” Gibson said of life with her two sons and two daughters.

Gibson, who was eight years old at the time, said she was confused when her mother told her to “delay answering.” When asked for further clarification, her mother explained, “She might ask, ‘What color are the walls?’ and you’ll say, ‘White,’ and she’ll say, ‘Don’t do that,’ and then when she asks, ‘What color are the walls?’ you better remember to answer.” [you’re] “Let’s think about it.”
Gibson clarified that the mother did not fully “unravel” the situation or use derogatory language.
“She basically said, ‘We have to go in there and make them believe there’s something wrong with you guys.’

The “How You Gonna Act Like That” singer said her mother explained to her that she would probably have to take some sort of assessment, which she did. Gibson remembers a woman coming into her room, “talking to me like I was a dull person” and placing a puzzle in front of her. Gibson said she complied with her mother’s request to “delay the answer.”
“i don’t remember [either] My sisters were doing it. [My brother and I] I certainly did.”

The Fast and Furious actor said he’s extremely grateful for what he has now.
“My whole life, my whole career, has been like a rental car. At some point, I felt like I had to return it,” he admitted. “It’s been almost 30 years. [of fame]… God has my back. … Every day feels like Christmas.”
