Father criticizes 'hypocritical' New Jersey Little League for suspending son's bat flip

Controversy Surrounds Haddonfield Little Leaguer’s Suspension

The suspension of a New Jersey Little Leaguer, Marco Rocco, for flipping his bat after hitting a home run has sparked discussions about hypocrisy within the league.

Marco’s father, Joe Rocco, expressed frustration after his son received a suspension just before a crucial game in the New Jersey Little League State Tournament. “They’re being hypocritical,” he remarked. “They post videos of bat flips on their Twitter, yet my son got a one-game ban for celebrating.” It’s hard to argue against that point.

Throughout the tournament, Little League’s social media showcased numerous bat flips, similar to Marco’s, while he faced punishment.

In 2022, during the Little League World Series, Nicaragua’s Luis Garcia hit a dramatic home run, celebrated with an enthusiastic bat flip, and received praise from commentators. Garcia was not penalized in that instance, creating a stark contrast to Marco’s situation. ESPN’s announcers, including former MLB player Todd Frazier, celebrated Garcia’s excitement and his bat flip, calling it one of the most impressive they had ever seen.

Yet in Marco’s case, the celebration was labeled “horseplay” by Little League officials. Joe believes this inconsistency is troubling, noting that while kids are encouraged to watch exciting bat flips, they’re penalized for performing similar actions. “The worst part is that Little League openly promotes this type of celebration,” he said. “They should be clearer about what’s allowed and what’s not.”

Currently, Haddonfield remains one of the final four teams in New Jersey’s 12U division, preparing for crucial double-elimination matches. Following the suspension, the Rocco family sought legal intervention, hoping to contest Marco’s ban, and were looking for a hearing soon.
