Moldy Discoveries in Reusable Water Bottles

It’s a bit alarming, isn’t it? Many of us might not clean our reusable water bottles as thoroughly as we should. Sure, hot water and soap are good starts, but mold can hide in spots that just aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Not all bottles are meant to be taken apart for cleaning, but one concerned father recently found significant mold accumulation in his Yeti bottles. He is now emphasizing the importance of inspecting the bottles that kids frequently use.

In TikTok videos, Jason Sullivan shared how his daughter cycles through several bottles daily, yet they often seem dirtier than expected. “These bottles aren’t built to be disassembled, so I reached out to Yeti for guidance on how to clean them,” he explained in his video.

Sullivan noted that Yeti suggested boiling the bottles for five to ten minutes. After following their advice, he showed the camera the mold that had formed under the rubber seal where the straw fits. “It came out looking like this,” he said.

“If your kids use these kinds of bottles, please check them regularly. You never know where mold might be hiding,” he cautioned.

In the comments, many viewers echoed his concerns, venting about their frustrations with pricey water bottles.

One person remarked, “This is why we switched to Klean Kanteen. It simplifies cleaning with fewer parts. I just got tired of dealing with stubborn mold.”

Another added, “It’s surprising how many unnecessary parts these bottles have, making it almost impossible to clean them properly.”

This isn’t the first time social media has shed light on moldy issues in insulated bottles. Kayla Houlihan, 32, was stunned to find significant mold growing on her bottle straws. As the founder of Tribe Skin Care, she shared her experience in TikTok videos, which have since gone viral, especially since she mentioned feeling intermittently sick for three years.

After her sister suggested cleaning the straws, Kayla was shocked by the discovery. “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” she said in her video. In a follow-up, she acknowledged, “I realize this is completely on me. It seems common sense to clean the straws, but I must have missed that note.”
