Tragic Murder-Suicide in California
A father in California tragically shot and killed his wife and one of his daughters before turning the gun on himself in a heartbreaking murder-suicide. This incident, which has left families reeling, unfolded early Thursday morning.
Hector Lionel Alfaro, 52, began the violent attack around 8 a.m. in their home located on Lorail Avenue in Lakewood. Armed with a handgun, he shot his 48-year-old wife and 17-year-old daughter in the upper torso, as reported by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Meanwhile, the couple’s 19-year-old daughter awoke to the sound of gunshots echoing through the house. Authorities indicated that Alfaro aimed several shots at her but missed before ultimately taking his own life right in front of her.
Upon entering the residence, officials discovered Alfaro with self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a hidden area of the house, while his wife and youngest daughter were found in separate bedrooms. Unfortunately, all three were pronounced dead at the scene.
The daughter, who was described as “emotionally distraught,” was physically unharmed amidst the chaos of the gunfire. Two firearms were recovered from the home following the incident.
Police had arrived after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon and initially took the daughter into custody for questioning. However, she was released once it became clear that her father was the perpetrator.
Lt. Daniel Vizcarra of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department noted that the 19-year-old was visibly shaken when she fled the home after the tragedy. Her uncle, Jorge Fuentes, expressed how difficult it is to comprehend the situation, remarking on the profound pain and anger experienced by the family. “It’s hard to process. The pain. The anger. How could someone who was supposed to be their protector do this?” he questioned.
Vizcarra reassured the community, stating there was no ongoing threat, emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident. “Lakewood is one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County,” Capt. Dan Holguin remarked.
Fuentes also mentioned that family and friends have rallied together to offer support during this trying time. “They have been incredibly hospitable, taking care of our needs and providing a home for us,” he said.
At this time, the names of the victims have not been disclosed.
