FBI Explains Non-Instant Gun Background Checks for 18-20 Year Olds

The FBI currently conducts background checks on prospective gun buyers between the ages of 18 and 20, which is a far cry from the instant background checks that have been conducted on gun buyers since the 1990s.

April 1, 2024, NRA-ILA It pointed out The new background checks are a significant departure from those of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and could be called “non-instant criminal background checks.”

Strengthening background checks for buyers between the ages of 18 and 20 is part of the bipartisan Safe Communities Act (BSCA), a gun control bill of 2022, which Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Democratic I worked hard to help secure it.

F.B.I. explained:

[The BSCA] Currently, NICS requires more than routine treatment for gun buyers under 21 years of age. In addition to running names through the NICS database, a select group of investigators are currently contacting state juvenile justice, mental health, and local law enforcement agencies to automatically We are checking for potentially disqualifying information that is not in the database being queried. Knicks. Another provision of the new law extends the time that examiners have to investigate cases involving under-21s from three to 10 business days if there are established grounds for doing so.

NRA-ILA I got it. “In 2022, the agency warned gun owners and policymakers that the BSCA would eliminate instant background checks for young people and would be used by the Biden administration to create a waiting period system,” the agency said.
