Dusty Johnson’s Legislative Career and Future Plans

For four terms, South Dakota’s Dusty Johnson has carved out a significant role in the House of Representatives, particularly focusing on agricultural policy, U.S.-China relations, and fiscal responsibility.

Often labeled a “problem solver,” Johnson recently discussed his legislative journey, ambitions for the governor’s office, and upcoming plans during an interview at Freedom Fest in Las Vegas.

Johnson, who has gained respect for his thorough examination of China-related issues, argues that the U.S. frequently underestimates the economic and geopolitical challenges posed by Beijing.

“I think the biggest mistake is that we’re essentially sleepwalking through this competition,” he said, expressing concern that “Chinese leaders are actively figuring out how to outmaneuver America.” He added, “We end up focusing more on fighting among ourselves than on competing with the Chinese Communist Party.”

A former leader of the Republican Main Street Caucus—comprising center-right Republicans—Johnson has consistently sought to break through the notorious gridlock in Washington.

He reflected on the current political climate, noting a tendency for extreme voices to dominate discussions and how it feels, at times, like “difficult times to be normal.” He pointed to recent primary elections, suggesting that this trend is visible in both political parties.

“Turnout in primaries is rarely large,” he noted. “Those who show up tend to prioritize ideology over pragmatism, making it hard for nuanced messages to resonate.” The difficulty of navigating political extremes has become increasingly evident, even when Republicans have held power.

Johnson emphasized that a bipartisan approach is crucial for tackling budgetary issues. He expressed frustration that various leaders have vowed not to reform essential social programs without offering realistic solutions. “I certainly have put forth significant reform ideas for our entitlement programs,” he mentioned, affirming that halting reforms would only worsen the situation.

As he entered the 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary as a leading candidate, Johnson ultimately finished third against real estate executive Toby Dowden and incumbent Governor Larry Rhoden.

He reflected candidly on the impact of negative campaigning, acknowledging that it has affected perceptions of him as a “career politician” and a “RINO.” This strategy has proven effective, tapping into current sentiments among voters weary of traditional political figures.

Despite the tough primary outcome, Johnson remains hopeful about his future. He recalls successes in both business and nonprofit arenas and insists he isn’t done yet, viewing his age—50—as still quite youthful and energetic.

“I don’t know what’s next,” he admitted, emphasizing his commitment to serving as South Dakota’s representative until January. “You can make society better through business, and I’m not ready to step aside just yet. There’s still work to do.”
