The FBI has identified the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, according to sources speaking to NBC News.
Trump was shot while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday and was quickly removed by Secret Service. His campaign later said he was in good condition and receiving medical treatment.
Later in the evening, it was reported that the FBI had identified the would-be assassin and that he was shot dead at the scene.
He is reportedly a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, according to NBC News, but no other information was available. Quote Five senior U.S. law enforcement officials were briefed on the matter.
In a statement, the former president offered his condolences to the family of the man killed at the rally and confirmed that he had been shot.
“At this time, we don’t know anything about the shooter, who is now deceased. I was shot above my right ear,” Trump said. “I knew right away something was wrong because I heard a whoosh and a gunshot and felt the bullet go through my skin. I was bleeding badly and I knew what was going on.”
President Joe Biden addressed the nation about the incident in a written statement, in which he called on Americans to condemn political violence.
The gunman reportedly fired eight shots from an AR-15 style rifle at Trump from about 150 yards away.
