FBI releases video showing January 2021 pipe bomb suspect planting device outside DNC, RNC offices in DC

The FBI on Thursday released new video that allegedly shows a suspect planting pipe bombs outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee offices in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021.

Along with the video, the FBI also revealed that the suspect is believed to be approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, in an effort to elicit new information from the public ahead of the fourth anniversary of the crime.

The FBI said a $500,000 reward is still available for information leading to an arrest.

The attempted attack occurred the night before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, but there is no clear connection between the two incidents.

“Unless we can confirm the identity of the suspect, it's very difficult to definitively establish a motive,” David Sandberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI's Washington field office, told The Associated Press. “So it would be difficult to say there is a connection, but not an unrelated one.”

Investigators don't even know if the suspect is male or female.

The FBI said the suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, a face mask, black gloves and Nike Air Max Speed ​​Turf shoes, with 25,000 pairs sold between August 2018 and the time of the attack. He added that it was less than that.

“Based on the attire, these are probably the most notable or distinctive in terms of what the suspect was wearing,” Sandberg said. “I hope someone recognizes that.”

The FBI has evaluated more than 600 tips, investigated approximately 39,000 video files and conducted more than 1,000 interviews over the past four years.

The suspect then planted a second bomb in an alley behind the Republican National Committee building around 8:16 p.m., and was last seen on surveillance footage two minutes later, authorities said. was seen walking in front of houses in D.C., carrying a backpack that was believed to have been used to carry the bomb. pipe bomb.

“We still believe there are people out there who have information that we may not have realized was important before,” the narrator of the FBI video said. “We're asking people to come forward and share that information with the FBI.”

No one was injured in the attempted attack and the bomb was successfully defused, but the FBI said it could have been fatal.

Vice President Kamala Harris and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were both near the DNC offices until the first bomb was discovered and deactivated on the afternoon of January 6th.
