FBI Seeks Help Identifying Person of Interest in Charlie Kirk Shooting

The FBI is asking for public assistance in identifying a man linked to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a well-known conservative commentator and founder of Turning Point USA, which occurred on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the agency shared two photos of a man dressed in a black long-sleeve t-shirt featuring an American flag design. He was also seen wearing jeans, sunglasses, and a gray hat.

“We are asking for the public’s help identifying this person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. 1-800-CALL-FBI,” the FBI’s Salt Lake City division posted on X.

The search for the shooter continues despite the fact that a separate individual was detained and later released after law enforcement questioned him, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.

“Our investigation continues and we will keep releasing information to ensure transparency,” Patel mentioned on Wednesday evening.

This announcement came after videos circulated on social media showing an elderly man who had been arrested following the shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The incident took place during a speaking engagement that was part of a tour of college campuses, an initiative Kirk is quite recognized for.

Investigators believe the shooter fired a single shot using a high-powered, bolt-action rifle, which was later found in nearby woods. The bullet struck Kirk in the neck, leading to his emergency transport to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Beau Mason, the commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, indicated that the suspect appeared to be in the college-age demographic, which made him less conspicuous on campus.

According to reports, two individuals detained on Wednesday were released, as they were not linked to the crime.

Authorities also stated that the suspect possibly escaped by jumping off a roof and running into a nearby neighborhood after firing the shot that killed Kirk.

As the investigation progresses, the recovered firearm and ammunition are being analyzed in a federal lab, with hopes that this may help in identifying the shooter or uncovering a possible motive.
