The FBI’s Albany division, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, is investigating allegations of mortgage fraud involving New York Attorney General Letitia James.
This investigation was first reported by Times Union after the Federal Housing and Finance Agency (FHFA) Director, William Prute, sent a federal criminal referral to the Department of Justice earlier this month. Prute’s letter alleges that James acquired a lucrative mortgage for a home in Virginia in 2023 and improperly altered documents regarding a Brooklyn brownstone that she has owned since 2001.
The accusations suggest that James claimed the property was her primary residence while serving as a prominent New York police officer and misrepresented the number of units in that residence.
Both the FBI and James’ office chose not to comment when approached.
