Investigation into John Bolton’s Alleged Misuse of Classified Materials
WASHINGTON – A senior FBI official has indicated that former Trump national security adviser John Bolton could face criminal charges related to his use of private servers for highly classified information. This assertion raises questions about why the Biden administration initially decided to set the case aside.
On Friday morning, federal agents conducted searches at Bolton’s offices in Maryland and Washington, D.C., looking for evidence linked to the alleged removal of sensitive national security documents critical of Trump.
This issue was reportedly first discovered in 2020, arising from what was described as a “very specific intellectual ability.” It involved Bolton allegedly informing his wife and daughter about his resignation at his White House desk, prior to Trump officially firing him in September 2019.
Interestingly, this case is said to be different from the prior inquiry regarding national security secrets that Bolton included in his 2020 book, “The Room Where It Happened.” That matter had been brought to the Biden administration but was placed on the back burner.
Now, Trump’s Justice Department is questioning whether the Biden FBI’s inaction was politically motivated, given Bolton’s status as a prominent critic of Trump.
A senior FBI source mentioned to the Post, “They may know he was taking material that was harmful to US national security, and they made no effort to retrieve it.” Bolton frequently voices his criticisms of Trump during media appearances, leading some to speculate that allowing him to avoid consequences could be seen as a political strategy.
“Bolton had a friendly government,” the official claimed, suggesting that there was an unusual leniency in how investigations were conducted against him.
Some investigators referred to this situation as “airtight,” indicating it was so obscure that even FBI director Kash Patel was unaware of it until about a month after a February meeting, where he sought a briefing on the sensitive case. Initially, he believed it was connected to an earlier investigation concerning Bolton’s book.
However, investigators clarified that this was an entirely new issue, one that had been stalled under the Biden administration for the past four years.
Recent actions were aimed at uncovering additional evidence of the alleged crimes.
Sources reveal that federal agents found “many” potential pieces of evidence at Bolton’s home and retrieved items from his D.C. office. While they appear confident regarding the case against him, the Justice Department is reportedly not pursuing his wife and daughter.
