FBI’s Wray Reveals That China Has Penetrated U.S. Infrastructure

Outgoing FBI Director Christopher Wray said in an interview Sunday, a week before he leaves office, that China has penetrated U.S. water treatment plants, power grids and other critical civilian infrastructure and is “waiting for an opportunity to launch a cyberattack.” ” he revealed. Any time and place you like.

asked on CBS 60 minutes Wray on China's intrusions into U.S. cyber and infrastructure said China's cyber program is the largest in the world, stealing more personal and business data from Americans than all countries combined. Then he added:

But it's also much more than cyber theft. There is another aspect of the Chinese cyber threat that I think desperately deserves attention, but which has not received much public attention. And that is the Chinese government's prior positioning of American civilian critical infrastructure. To lie in wait on those networks, allowing them to wreak havoc and cause real-world harm at a time and place of their choosing.

Wray said China has already injected malware into critical U.S. infrastructure.

“Things like water treatment plants. We're talking about transportation systems. We're talking about targeting the energy sector, the power grid, natural gas pipelines. And recently, our telecommunications systems have been targeted. “I saw it happening,” he said.

Ray said China is also heeding the call of the Americans.

CBS News reported that China is collecting communications from U.S. national security officials, as well as the Kamala Harris campaign and President-elect Donald Trump himself.

The revelations sparked outrage from former Trump administration officials, who said Wray had not done enough to stop the Chinese threat and only publicly discussed the matter a week after leaving office. Ta.

Joshua Steinman, who served as senior director for cybersecurity at the National Security Council during the Trump administration, posted on X:

This makes me furious. I left them with the tools they need to confront this. And those tools apparently went unused for four years. Complete mismanagement.

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade criticized Wray for failing to address the threat and criticized the Biden administration for talking about it but not taking action.

Other commentators on X accused Ray of waiting “until the last moment” to warn the Americans.

“Why did FBI Director Christopher Wray give a 60 Minutes interview right before he left office and tell him that China was installing sleeper cells across the country…?” one posted.

“Ray knows that Chinese operatives are infiltrating the country to attack the power grid all the time. How did they get here? What exactly is your job? “Is that so?” another poster posted.

Wray said resigning was “one of the most difficult decisions” he had ever made, but said he had few options after President-elect Donald Trump identified who would replace him.

President Trump nominated Kash Patel, former deputy director of national intelligence and chief of staff at the Department of Defense, for this role.
