Federal court permits Trump administration to restrict Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood

Recent Court Ruling on Medicaid Funding for Planned Parenthood

The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has decided that the Trump administration is allowed to block Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood as legal challenges continue. This follows a ruling from a lower court in July that mandated Planned Parenthood clinics across the country receive ongoing Medicaid support.

In July, President Trump signed the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) into law, which includes measures that limit Medicaid funding for certain tax-exempt organizations like Planned Parenthood, particularly if they provide abortions.

In 2023, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the U.S., received over $800,000 from Medicaid. The organization filed a lawsuit to contest this directive, warning of potentially “catastrophic” effects on its operations.

This lawsuit was directed at Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani’s prior ruling against the blockade of this funding was problematic, claiming she disregarded the decision made by elected officials about taxpayer funds and abortion, which many Americans view as morally unacceptable.

The DOJ criticized Talwani’s reasoning, calling it “flimsy.” However, the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled to temporarily pause her injunction, now allowing the federal government to withhold Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood, which reported performing 392,715 abortions during the previous fiscal year.

Planned Parenthood has expressed concern that this ruling could affect over 1.1 million patients relying on Medicaid at its nearly 600 clinics nationwide, with the potential to close around 200 of those locations.

“While the Trump administration wants to rip away reproductive freedom, we’re here to say loud and clear: we will not back down,” stated Dominique Lee, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. “This is not over.”

A pro-life group, Live Action, founded by anti-abortion activist Lila Rose, praised the ruling on social media, referring to it as “incredible news!” This organization focuses on changing societal views and laws surrounding abortion through educational content and activism.
