California’s Election Under Federal Scrutiny

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) plans to send federal poll watchers to California for its upcoming election. This scrutiny comes ahead of a contentious ballot measure aiming to bypass the state’s independent committee for congressional redistricting, which could potentially add five Democrat seats ahead of the 2026 elections.

California Governor Gavin Newsom initiated a campaign for Proposition 50, allowing voters to redraw congressional maps in response to Texas’s recent reconfiguration that added five Republican seats.

“Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” said U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

She pointed out that the federal observers will focus on ensuring transparency, security of ballots, and compliance with federal regulations in several counties, including Los Angeles and Orange.

Republicans in California have called for these federal observers due to concerns over reported irregularities that could compromise voter confidence in the election results. In a letter, California GOP Chairwoman Corrin Rankin expressed worries that these issues might deter voter participation.

“The Department of Justice will do everything necessary to protect the votes of eligible American citizens,” said Justice Department official Harmeet Dhillon. “Transparent election processes and election monitoring are critical tools for safeguarding our elections and ensuring public trust in the integrity of our elections.”

Newsom has criticized the move as unnecessary and potentially damaging. He hinted at a possibility of the observers claiming election fraud should the results not favor them.

“This is not a federal election. The US DOJ has no business interfering,” Newsom stated. “Deploying these federal forces appears to be an intimidation tactic meant for one thing: suppress the vote.”

Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan remarked that the presence of federal election observers is not unusual and is standard practice intended to ensure transparency in the electoral process. He further noted that California has strict laws in place to prevent election interference.

Interestingly, the DOJ under the Biden administration previously announced plans to monitor jurisdictions in 27 states during the 2024 election, including California.

The election day in California is set for November 4th.
