Investigation into Boston’s Housing Program
A housing initiative in Boston is facing scrutiny from the Trump administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
On Thursday, HUD declared the start of an investigation into what they term the city’s “race-based” housing strategy. The department suggests that the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts of Boston may potentially breach civil rights protections as outlined in the Fair Housing Act and Title VI.
“This distorted thinking will be fully exposed and Boston will be brought into full compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws,” stated HUD.
A letter dispatched by HUD to the Boston Housing Authority mid-September expressed concerns that federal funding was being used to support these race-based initiatives. In that letter, the city’s 2025 Housing Strategy is referenced, which claims to help reduce racial disparities by improving homeownership and development opportunities for organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
According to the housing strategy, the objective is for at least 65% of homebuying opportunities to go to BIPOC households.
HUD has requested a range of documents from the city regarding the matter.
The department informed Mayor Michelle Wu’s office on Thursday about the initiation of this investigation into Boston’s housing policies.
HUD’s correspondence indicates concerns over the city’s approach towards integration of racial equity in housing assistance, particularly focused on “Black and Latino families.” The letter argues that these methods are rooted in what they deem “racist theories of housing justice.”
HUD Secretary Scott Turner articulated that the city appears to be engaging in a social engineering scheme, prioritizing ideological concerns over essential needs in housing.
He reaffirmed, “HUD is committed to protecting the civil rights of all Americans and will thoroughly examine the city’s stated goal of ‘integrating racial equity into all levels of city government.'” Turner emphasized that any discriminatory foundations would be thoroughly examined.
A spokesperson for the city responded to these allegations, reaffirming Boston’s commitment to fair and affordable housing and vowing to defend their progress against what they see as unwarranted federal attacks.
