Denver Secures Temporary Injunction Against Trump Administration’s Funding Threat
On Tuesday, a federal judge in Washington issued a temporary injunction that prevents the Trump administration from withholding federal funds related to a transportation program. This decision came in response to a lawsuit filed by Denver and several other local governments in May. They argued that the administration’s threat to cut approximately $4 billion in federal grants overstepped its authority, characterizing the actions as “illegal and politically motivated.”
The judge concluded that the potential harms from the administration’s threats could be significant. “The injury stems from the looming risk, and the plaintiff is currently suffering,” the ruling noted. “The court recognizes that the uncertainty around this budget can cause irreparable damage.”
Federal Court Pushes Back Against Trump’s Education Policy Changes
The legal action was triggered after U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a warning in April, notifying federal fund recipients that failing to comply with the administration’s views on diversity, equity, and inclusion could lead to funding losses. Duffy’s memo also indicated that disregarding federal immigration policies might further jeopardize financial support.
Judge’s Ruling Accentuated by Local Reactions
Denver’s Mayor Mike Johnston expressed his approval of the judge’s decision on Wednesday. “Denver complies with all federal, state, and local laws. It’s not unreasonable to expect similar adherence from the White House,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the court’s swift ruling that safeguards the federal funds necessary for the city.
