Federal law enforcement officers have arrested Eric James Rennert, an Illinois man who was charged last month with threatening to kidnap and kill a federal judge in Florida, believed to be Judge Eileen Cannon.
Judge Cannon is presiding over the “documents” case against former President Donald Trump in the Southern District of Florida. She dismissed the case in July, ruling that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was unconstitutional. Mr. Smith is currently appealing this decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
The indictment against Renato lists six charges, all related to acts that allegedly took place in St. Lucie County, Florida. Cannon, who is not named in the indictment, is the only judge in the nearby Fort Pierce district of the Southern District of Florida.
In May, Renato allegedly threatened to kidnap and injure a judge and the judge's family, according to the indictment. In May, he also allegedly threatened to kidnap and kill her in retaliation for some of her official duties. He allegedly made similar threats two more times in May and two more times in July.
Democrats are furious that Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, ruled against Smith. In June, it was revealed that NBC and MSNBC analysts were the originators of a “coordinated campaign” to file ethics complaints against Cannon, but those complaints were dismissed.
